2004 Archive Nov 20, 2004 SmartCells, Inc. Signs License with M.I.T. On November 19th, SmartCells, Inc. entered into an exclusive, worldwide, royalty-bearing license with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for the intellectual property rights to technology disclosed in the U.S. patent application entitled "Stimuli-Responsive Systems For Controlled Drug Delivery”. This application covers work done by Dr. Todd Zion and others at the M.I.T. Chemical Engineering Department which includes important features of the company’s SmartInsulin product. Oct 2, 2004 SmartCells, Inc. Receives SBIR Grant from NIH On October 1st, 2004 SmartCells, Inc. received a Phase I SBIR grant from the National Institutes of Health. The grant provides $482,276 for FY 2005 (October 2004 September 2005) and $438,290 for FY 2006. The scope of the grant covers a significant part of the early work in the SmartInsulin product development plan. If Phase I is successful, the company will be eligible for $1 million per year for 3 years in Phase II funds. Sept 11, 2004 SmartCells, Inc. Completes Initial Series A Closing, Henry Kay Joins Board SmartCells, Inc. completed its initial closing of its Series A financing on September 10th. The financing was provided by private investors including members of the Boston chapter of the Keiretsu Forum. Coincident with the first closing, Henry Kay was appointed to the board as the first Series A director. Henry, a Group Vice President at Boston Scientific Corporation, brings over 30 years of experience in the medical industry in roles which include R&D, International Regulatory Affairs, and Strategic Planning of major pharmaceutical companies. |
